“I was born in San Francisco in 1944. I’ve been here almost my whole life. I have 5 masters degrees, 2 associates degrees, and no time to waste. Where you from?”
“Originally from Atlanta, but I’ve been here 5 years, I love the diversity and culture. It’s a much free-er place than where I grew up in the south, especially being black. What’s it been like for you being here in SF as a black man?”
“I’m not ‘black’. When I was growing up ‘black’ meant nigger and then I went to Germany around 1963 and when I got back in ’65 ‘black’ was supposed to be positive. I don’t wanna take on all that baggage and history. I’m an American. I am Nu-Bama.”
