Made my first trip to Bayview today and the first people I met were this lovely couple who ran this Christian bookstore. That’s Arnella on the left and Willie on the right.

“What’s it like living here?”
Willie – “I like it, we’ve got good community here, but it is on the low end of San Francisco. There are some rough elements out here.”
Arnella – “And that’s why we’re here. People come in here looking for help when they want to turn their life around.”
Me – “What’s the first book you would recommend to someone when they come in looking for help?”
Arnella – “The bible is always a great place to start. You just read it, and re-read it and God’s word becomes more and more clear. Where are you from?”
Me – “Atlanta.”
Willie – “Oh yeah! We’re from Mississipi.”
Me – “What brought you out here?”
Willie – “I came out when I was 19 and couldn’t leave.”
Me – “But what drove you to come in the first place?”
Willie – “Don’t know, just something inside.”
Me – “Me too.”
Arnella – “I came out to find a better life for myself. White folks back in Mississippi was terrible in those days.”
Me – “It’s called the dirty south for a reason, that’s for sure.”
