“What do you do for work and what does it mean to you?”
I teach capoeira which is great because I get to help people cultivate freedom in their bodies. I feel like a magician as the teachings begin to embody themselves in another’s physical reality. I love being the physical shaman, the medicine man. I love the ways that I see my students begin to absorb movement and settle in their own bodies. I love our community. I love the music and the niche culture that is created through my work. I love embodying freedom and cultivating beauty inside and out. My work means freedom. My work means joy and abundance. My work means equilibrium, spontaneity, creativity and grace.
“How did you get started doing all this?”
“I got involved in capoeira when I was 12 after I saw a cheesy 90’s movie about capoeira called Only The Strong. I was so inspired by the movement that I started practicing in my living room with friends. It was not until college that I met my first teacher, Carcará, who started me on the path of formal training. After moving to NYC in 2007 I met my second teacher, Mestre Ombrinho, who has encouraged me to be a true leader in the path of capoeira in the US. I began teaching in 2009 in NYC and moved to SF in 2012 to start my own school. Suffice to say, I am very excited.”
“What’s the mission statement of your school?”
“Our mission is to inspire freedom, beauty, creativity, and grace in all people through capoeira.”
