“What are you doing with that camera?”
“I’m working on a documentary about gentrification.”
“How’d you get interested in that?”
“A few months ago I was at Dia De Los Muertos and there were a lot of protests about gentrification. I’m born and raised here and I’ve watched the neighborhoods change. I’m going to be majoring in Economics so I’m looking at it with that lens. Supply and demand, people coming in. I’m also looking at it culturally. People want to move to the Mission because it’s a certain way, but they’re displacing the people that made it that way. I think the goal with the documentary is not to stop the gentrification, but document it’s happening.”
“Are you gonna screen the documentary somewhere around town?”
“Yeah, August 16th at the Little Roxie. It’s called ‘Mi casa no es su casa’.”

“Is this part of a school project or something?”
No, I just graduated high school and I’m going to George Washington in the fall.”
“Why there?”
“Well I knew I wanted to leave, but definitely come back. New York was my top choice.”
“Why’d you want to leave?”
“I don’t know, I just felt like it was time to experience something new and college is a good way to do so. I wanted to look in urban areas and this school admitted me.”
“That’s cool. What are you going to be studying there?”
“Economics and computer science. The film right now is just a hobby.”
