“I’m passionate about food. I just finished working for a food non-profit and now I’m going to be managing a restaurant in Berkeley.”
“Why are you passionate about food?
“I was a sociology major, my mom was a chef. I saw that food was an interesting lens to look at society through. That’s why I joined FoodCorp. I did a service term in Connecticut last year. I moved to Oakland in September when we expanded to California. I was overseeing 12 service members who were doing what I did last year. We were working with food service directors to procure more local produce and have what the kids are learning about show up on their lunch trays. I think there’s something holistic about food, and there’s something holistic about the world too. Now I’m on the for profit tip but I’m at a restaurant that’s really conscious and that are sourcing things locally.”
“Why is local food sourcing important?”
“Because it tastes better, and it’s better for you…the food industry is gonna have to go back to that the way the drought is now. All these factors are making it clear that that’s they way it needs to be. You’re not supposed to eat apples from 200 miles away when you can get them from 2 miles away, it doesn’t make any sense.”

“What does food mean to you?”
“It means a lot to me. The non-profit I was connected to was working with kids in low resource communities, trying to teach them about how things grow, how to cook, how to read nutritional facts labels. Basic things to help them live healthier lives in the long run.“

“I just got this to learn more about the food movement.”
