“She was always preparing me for life because she knew she didn’t have much time. It wasn’t like, ‘let’s play’, it was like ‘come cook, come learn how to wash clothes and clean up’. One time I saw her cut herself and I said ‘Momma, you cut yourself, you not gonna cry?’ and she said, ‘For what, is that gonna make me stop bleeding?’ It was a lot of little lessons like that.”
